UPDATE: Campus lockdowns have been lifted and dismissal will resume as normal.

Due to an emerging county situation, the Sherriff's department has ordered an immediate lockdown of both Pine Burr and Santa Fe Elementaries. Dismissal will be delayed until further notice.

The Cleveland High School (CHS) Book Club and the CHS National Honor Society teamed together to volunteer at the Texas Families Literary Festival hosted by Story Square at Discovery Green in downtown Houston, Texas, this past Saturday, November 9th. When the CHS bus arrived, the festival was not festive. Upon investigation, it was learned the organizer had some staffing issues. Thankfully, CHS brought 33 students and 5 amazing teachers. Students were coordinated and sent forth. Within an hour, the festival was festive and running smoothly. The CHS students and teachers served at several booths and stations throughout the day and had time to enjoy the festivities. The grand finale for our team was a talk by the author of The Harrowing, Kristen Keisling. She gave an inspiring presentation using many of the CHS volunteers as props for her talk. This is the 3rd year for this free literacy festival which normally attracts more than 2,500 visitors. Participants enjoyed cultural entertainment from around the world, free books, games, crafts, and lots of opportunities to talk with published authors. The CHS Book Club and the CHS National Honor Society are grateful for the opportunity to help this energetic organization to meet one of their goals; the goal to "keenly design and create spaces for parent-child educational interactions rooted in literacy...and fun family learning." Today is the final day for the Texas Memorial Walkway at CHS! Presentations will continue all day at CHS from 8:00AM - 2:45PM. Parents are welcome to attend and listen to the presentations or view the walk. Once again, thank you to M-COPE, Wendell Campbell from Houston HIDTA, and all those who helped make this possible for our students and community.

We would like to thank our friends at Montgomery County Overdose Prevention Endeavor (M-COPE), Houston HIDTA, Mosaics, UTHealth Houston, Kingwood Pines Hospital, and Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare for partnering with us on our community Overdose Awareness event yesterday! Special thanks to Wendell Campbell from Houston HIDTA for his great, informative presentation on the dangers of fentanyl, and to Kathy Posey from M-COPE for helping to put together the powerful, impactful Memorial Walkway on display in our high school. Throughout the next few days, CHS students will gather in the gym to experience the Memorial Walkway for themselves. We are proud to continue putting on events like this for our students and our community. Together, we will continue to work towards #ADrugFreeClevelandISD.

Coach Quirino Silva has announced his retirement after a distinguished 30-year career, with the last three years serving as the Head Football Coach and Campus Coordinator for Cleveland ISD. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Coach Silva for his remarkable leadership within our district and athletic program. His influence has extended beyond the football field, positively impacting students in both the classroom and everyday life. Congratulations, Coach Silva, on your retirement. The committee convened last night to recap the last meeting, dive deep into the district's facility needs, and work together to prioritize the biggest issues facing our schools.
