CLEVELAND, TX - Cleveland ISD's nationally recognized Career and Technical Education (CTE) Aviation & Engineering Program is once again in the spotlight, earning statewide recognition in a feature article published by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB).
The article, "Flying High: Cleveland ISD CTE Students Take to the Skies," highlights the district's innovative Aviation Tango Flight Aerospace & Engineering Program and the incredible opportunities it provides students through authentic, hands-on learning experiences.
Students in the program gain real-world experience in aviation, aerospace engineering, advanced manufacturing, and aircraft maintenance while working toward industry-recognized credentials. Depending on their pathway, students have the opportunity to earn a commercial drone license, complete FAA-approved private pilot ground school, log flight simulator hours, and even help build FAA-certified aircraft.
One of the program's most remarkable achievements is its partnership with Tango Flight, which allows Cleveland ISD students to build real airplanes as part of their coursework. The TASB article notes that Cleveland ISD students completed their first aircraft in just two years and are on track to complete their second aircraft in only one year, an accomplishment rarely seen among participating schools nationwide.
The article also recognizes the program's exceptional student success. Over the past three years, Cleveland ISD has certified approximately 500 commercial drone pilots, while students have achieved a 98% pass rate on pilot certification examinations, well above the national average.
Beyond technical skills, the program prepares students for careers in one of the nation's fastest-growing industries by emphasizing leadership, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Students apply classroom concepts in mathematics and science to real-world aviation challenges, giving them a competitive advantage as they pursue college, military service, or careers in aerospace and engineering.
