Cleveland ISD students recently took learning to new heights by participating in an unforgettable aviation experience hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Cleveland Chapter at Cleveland Municipal Airport.
Nearly 100 students, ages 8–17, were invited to explore the world of aviation through hands-on activities and discovery flights led by volunteer pilots. The event gave students a firsthand look at flight operations, aircraft controls, and the science of aviation, all while soaring over their hometown.
Cleveland High School’s Aviation Program, led by teacher Brian Stafford, remains one of the district’s premier career and technical education pathways. With nearly 300 students enrolled, the program has already achieved major milestones, including the successful construction of a student-built aircraft.
Among those inspired by the experience was Ricardo Suarez, a Cleveland High School graduate who helped build the district’s aircraft and is now pursuing his pilot’s license. Suarez returned to volunteer during the event, encouraging current students to follow their dreams in aviation and beyond.
“This event is a perfect example of what happens when classroom learning connects with real-world opportunities,” said Dr. Davila, Chief Academic Officer. “Our goal is to help students see that a career in aviation, or any STEM field, is possible.”
Cleveland ISD extends its gratitude to the EAA Cleveland Chapter, airport staff, community volunteers, and district educators who made this event possible.
